Discussion of Genesis and other scriptures

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

I’m opening this thread to discuss the meaning of Genesis 1.  We, being human and fallible, have various choices in what to do with Genesis 1:

1. accept that the words of Genesis  came from God, and should be interpreted to mean the Cosmos is young (several thousand years old)

2. accept that the words of Genesis  came from God, but should be interpreted to allow the Cosmos to be old

3. reject the Genesis account as coming from God

I am of the opinion study of the physical evidence versus debating theology will help resolve the problem.  The scientific method (which incidentally was inspired by verses like Romans 1:20 and other scriptures) is premised on the belief that nature is structured such that the scientific method will be able to lead us to important truths.

I am of the opinion God delights to make bold statements about human history which can be corroborated by physical evidence.  He even said ”If Christ is not raised, your faith is in vain”.  If certain historical truths are not true, the Christian faith is in vain.  I believe God has invited sincere seekers to examine the phyiscal evidence, and follow the evidence where it leads.

That said, I’d like to begin the discussion with something Janice of Uncommon Descent asked here:

Criticisms of YEC RATE group

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Several years ago (before 2003),  there was a joint venture by 3 prominent creationist organizations (ICR, AiG, CRS) seeking to find serious flaws in mainstream radiometric dating techniques.  The venture was known as RATE (Radioactivity and the Age of The Earth).  However, not every creationist (myself included) was enthusiastic with the quality of the work.  Consider this post by Helen Setterfield:

Helen Setterfield on RATE

“In response to the RATE material. We disagree strongly with a lot of what they are proposing. They are saying the speed of radio decay accelerated miraculously during creation week and during the Flood. We disagree. The speed of radio decay is linked to the changes in all the atomic constants, which are triggered by the changes in the Zero Point Energy. This article of Barry’s might help:

It summarizes his work for the last ten years.

God bless. ”

Criticism of CDK from brother Stephen J. Cheesman

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

The following was offered by Stephen J. Cheesman, a signatory of the Discovery Institute’s  Dissent from Darwin list.    I wish to give Dr. Cheesman a fair hearing in his criticism of CDK.  I would ask the YECs, and those friendly to Barry Setterfield’s work to give Dr. Cheesman a fair and civil hearing.  I believe the truth will eventually assert itself.  We need to give open discussion and investigation a chance to lead us to the truth.

The Apostle Peter said ”Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Pet 3:15).   In like manner we should be aware of the objections to CDK (c-decay) theory.

Hydroplate Theory Baby!

Learning Geology the YEC way.

Here is an animation of the Great Flood. It is narrated by a retired director of a major DOD research Center, Walter Brown, PhD MIT scientist and NSF fellow:

Here is an excerpt of another person explaining a portion of Hydroplate theory:

Open Thread #1, Plans and Purpose for this site

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

This is Salvador Cordova, the owner of this site. I am creating a website/blog/discussion forum to further educate the public about YEC and Intelligent Design from a theoretical and empirical basis. It will also be a place to collaborate and pool research and public relations ideas.

The first order of business is to get the website up and running. It’s not quite where I envision from a technical standpoint, but in the mean time I will be posting topics just to keep things running while the website continues to be improved.

I will post links to various beta test sites that will showcase the look and feel of the envisioned website after the first round of construction is complete.

I welcome your all’s feedback and assistance.

Consider this an open thread to talk about anything (with the provision the discussion is restricted within limits of civility.)

I am a Christian, and I believe the discovery of a YoungCosmos will honor Christ, but the approach, imho, should be through arguing the evidence, and not theology. If the evidence speaks for itself, then the Bible and various theologies will be believable.

Christ recognized in John 10:38 that some will distrust His Words even if they are willing to believe in Him. Imho, He admonished such good-hearted individuals who are doubting His words, rather than to simply stop doubting, begin considering the empirical evidence.

The miracle of the universe and life point to God. And if we discover the Cosmos is Young, the world not only points to the existence of God, but the Christian God. Let us follow the evidence where it leads.
